About the event

The National Electrical Code (NEC) (specifically Article 690) sets the standard for safe solar PV (Photovoltaic) system design, installation, and inspection in the US. Key requirements include rapid shutdown (690.12), grounding, proper wiring methods, and over current protection. It is updated every three years by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) to enhance safety.

Find out about the following: Article 690 (Solar Photovoltaic Systems): Covers all electrical components, such as modules, inverters, and conductors.

  • Article 705 (Interconnected Power Production Sources): Governs grid-tied system connections and the "120% rule" for bus bar capacity.

  • Article 706 (Energy Storage Systems): Addresses battery storage compliance.

  • Rapid Shutdown (690.12): Requires a mechanism to reduce voltage to 30V within 30 seconds to protect firefighters, usually requiring module-level power electronics.

  • Grounding and Bonding (690.43 & 690.47): Ensures all metallic, non-current-carrying parts are properly grounded to prevent shock.
